After a two-year hiatus, 50/50 raffles are back on campus in a big way. The Michigan State University (MSU) Athletic Department introduced the enhanced charitable addition to the game-day experience at Spartan Stadium during the opener against Western Michigan on August 30, 2013. With new partner Pointstreak 5050, raffles at Spartan athletic events will be operated with an innovative electronic 50/50 raffle technology. The Pointstreak 5050 system has become a common game-day experience in sports venues, recently being nominated for the Best In Sports Technology category at the 2013 Sports Business Awards.
MSU is the first Big Ten program to introduce the Pointstreak 5050 system to fans. The system enables tickets to be sold through electronic devices. Jackpot totals are displayed in real time on video monitors throughout the stadium. In addition to being announced in the fourth quarter, the winning number will also be available at msuspartans.com under the “Fans” tab on Michigan State Spartans Facebook and Twitter accounts @MSU_football and @MSU_athletics.
“Spartan fans are excited that 50 50 raffles are back,” said Paul Schager, MSU’s Associate Athletic Director for External Operations. “The ability for our fans to now view the growing jackpot throughout the game is a great addition to the Spartan Stadium experience.”
For football season, fans have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets at booths inside Spartan Stadium and from roaming sellers up until the 3rd quarter. Raffle tickets are priced at 3 for $5; 10 for $10; and 40 for $20. One winning ticket will be selected with the winner taking home half of the proceeds. The remaining proceeds will benefit Michigan State University Athletics with donations made to non-profit organizations that provide volunteer sales staff
Chris Meyer of Pointstreak added, "50/50’s for a long time were a staple of Spartan athletic events. I couldn’t be more excited that our system provides MSU the accountability and credibility needed to bring 50/50 raffles back to Spartan Stadium and other venues. Seeing the real-time jackpot on displays at Spartan Stadium, Breslin Center and Munn Ice Arena will be a great experience for fans.”
