One lucky fan walks away with record-setting quarter-million dollars
Toronto, ON – When the dust settled at last Sunday’s Canadian Football League’s Grey Cup, the Saskatchewan Roughriders walked off the field victorious and one lucky fan walked away richer by over a quarter of a million dollars.
While records were broken on the field, a new benchmark record was established off the field as the 50/50 raffle reached an amazing $504,174. According to experts, the half a million dollar jackpot easily eclipsed the previous record for the largest 50/50 raffle at a single sporting event by over two hundred thousand dollars. This new record is a testament to the dedication of the many volunteers who made this possible for both the charities and for the lucky fan.
That lucky fan was Denny Charlebois from the Ottawa, ON area as he was the winner of the Grey Cup 50/50 raffle and took home half the pot - a stunning $252,087 in cash.
CBC News caught up with Denny Charlebois, (courtesy CBC News) who attended the Grey Cup as a guest of his eldest son, a Saskatoon resident.
“I love Saskatchewan!” said Mr. Charlebois, who then describes to a CBC News reporter how he discovered his big win, “I went on the Internet and checked it out and started going through it and then all hell broke loose.”
While the Roughriders and Denny Charlebois were celebrating, the biggest winners are the University of Regina and the charities and causes that the Roughriders support throughout Saskatchewan.
